The Land Development Awards (LDA) program was created in 1967 to promote awareness of good design and planning in our communities by recognizing excellence in land development and innovative planning concepts. This distinguished county program, which concluded in 2005, awarded 147 projects. It acknowledged the developers, municipalities, and consultants that add to Montgomery County’s high quality of life. The program had two major award categories—the Outstanding Award and the Planning Merit Award. The Outstanding Award was awarded to projects that exemplified exceptional site planning and design, with every aspect being award-winning. Projects in this award category typically used innovative planning concepts or programs that implemented exceptional land use and site planning principles, incorporated environmental sensitivity, and preserved natural and cultural amenities. The Planning Merit Award recognized excellence in site planning and design in one or several aspects of a project, such as a successful pedestrian system, building placement, open space and environmental features, or an innovative planning process. Occasionally, a Special Recognition Award was given to noteworthy projects that demonstrated successful planning efforts. All nominated projects were visited, judged, and awarded by the Land Development Awards Selection Committee, consisting of members of the Montgomery County Planning Commission Board. Winning entries received local and regional publicity. Click here to view all award-winning projects.
